Privacy

What we do not collect

• No accounts, no names, no e-mail addresses.
• No analytics or tracking scripts of our own.
• Your display settings (theme, units, clock) and your cookie choice are kept in your browser’s local storage and never sent to us.

Your location

The “Near me” page asks your browser for your position only after you press the button. Distances are computed in your browser; the position is not sent to our server.

Your location reaches our server only in two cases you start yourself:

• Felt reports. If you add your location to a “Did you feel it?” report, it is rounded to 0.1° (about 11 km) before it is stored, together with the shaking level and the time. Reports are anonymous and shown only in aggregate.
• Alerts. When you subscribe to push alerts we store the place you chose, the radius, the minimum magnitude and the push address your browser gives us, so we can notify you. Unsubscribing deletes it.

IP addresses

To limit abuse of the API, felt reports and alerts we count requests per client. The IP address is combined with a secret salt and hashed; only the hash is kept in memory for a short time. Our web server keeps standard access logs for up to 14 days for security.

Advertising

Ads help keep the site free. The ad script is loaded only after you accept advertising cookies. If you choose “Only necessary”, no ad partner cookies are set. See Cookies. You can change your choice at any time there.

Third parties you connect to

Map tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap and relief tiles from Amazon Web Services’ public terrain dataset. Like any web request, these reveal your IP address to those services. Earthquake data is fetched by our server, not by your browser.
